In today's sophisticated engines, what once were simple components have been replaced with advanced control systems. Now, with greater emissions and fuel economy regulations, your newer model car has been improved from the models of days gone-by. But that means it also has a tougher inspection to pass. While spark plug and filter replacements are still required, you will eventually need a sophisticated technique to analyze your car's computerized control center. More than ever you will need a factory-trained technician... this is where our Computerized Engine Diagnostics come in to play.

At Murphy’s Auto Center, we take auto repair and maintenance seriously. Year after year, we continually reinvest in scanner software upgrades, allowing us to keep up with the ever changing onboard computer systems found in today’s advanced cars, trucks and SUVs. We are proud to be utilizing the best cutting edge automotive technology of any non-dealer in the Faribault area.

How Your Vehicle's Computerized Control Center Works:

A network of sensors transfer and track your engines operating conditions into electrical signals. The computer in your car receives this data. Based on collected information, computerized commands are sent to three systems: 1) ignition, 2) fuel, and 3) emission control.

Does Your Car Have a Problem, or Is It Just a Faulty Sensor?

Maybe your check engine light is already on. Meaning the computer in your car senses a problem. That same light is a cue to our auto technicians to check which commands have been triggered, along with checking the status of your engine control computer and related sensors. This is how our technicians know if your car's performance is caused by a real problem, or just a faulty sensor or computer glitch.

Tires mean much more to our vehicles than what we give them credit for. A flat tire can leave you stranded on the side of the road, while a tire imbalance can make your whole vehicle vibrate. At Murphy’s Auto Center, we have top-of-the-line technology specifically designed for tires. Let us achieve perfect wheel balancing and tire alignment for your car, allowing you to have a smooth ride every time you take your vehicle out for a drive.

-- Wheel Balancing --

A balanced wheel is a perfectly tuned wheel. Our technicians achieve this by placing measured lead weights on the opposite side of what we call the "heavy spot." This heavy spot exists because that part of the tire has received more exposure to road friction and heat. You typically need a trained eye to see these spots.

Recognizing when your vehicle has out-of-balance wheels is something our trained experts often need to see in person. We look for scalloped or erratic wear patterns on your tires. However, a tell-tale sign of unbalanced wheels for any driver is vibration in the steering wheel, seat, or floorboard at certain speeds (often between 50 and 70 mph).

-- Tire Rotation --

Tire rotation helps protect your tires against uneven wear that naturally occurs from everyday driving, constant turning, and greater front-axle weight than rear axle weight. With tire rotation, wheels are moved from one position on the car, to another. This ensures even tire wear. By moving (rotating) the tires as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, your tires may wear more evenly, helping extend their lifespan. Car manufacturers recommend a specific tire rotation frequency and pattern. Check your owner’s manual for more guidance, or ask one of our technicians for advice.

Our Tire Rotation Services Include:

  • Tire pressure check
  • Inspection of tires to identify visible damage or abnormal wear patterns
  • Following the recommendations by the vehicle's manufacturer when deciding the pattern of tire rotation
  • Installing lug nuts/bolts to the proper torque specifications

-- Computerized Wheel Alignment --

If your vehicles alignment is correctly positioned; you will not only get the best performance from it, you will also be ensured a smooth and safe ride. When alignment is not proportioned correctly, driving grows more expensive and dangerous.

  • Poor alignment can cause your car to pull or drift away from a straight road and cause an accident that you cannot avoid by steering out of it
  • Bad car alignment can cause excessive tire wear, which can cause a blow-out and poor traction
  • Improper alignment decreases gas mileage
  • It decreases tire life and adds stress to steering equipment

What Causes Poor Alignment?
You might have poor alignment after a major or minor collision that results in physical damage to your vehicle's frame. Driving over a pothole or bumping into or over a curb can also cause poor alignment.
